Montréal, April 21, 2005 - TELUS,
the Montréal Science Centre and the Old Port of
Montréal today announced a $7.5 million, 10-year
partnership that will see TELUS become a presenting sponsor
of the Montréal Science Centre, an establishment
committed to furthering science and technology education
for the leaders of tomorrow. TELUS also becomes a principal
sponsor of the Old Port of Montréal.
The partnership between TELUS and the Montréal
Science Centre and the Old Port of Montréal is
comprised of 4 major aspects:
· TELUS will become presenting sponsor of the
Montréal Science Centre.
· TELUS will become a principal sponsor of the
Old Port of Montréal, one of the most popular
recreo-touristic destinations in Québec with
over 6 million visitors per year.
· TELUS will give its name to the IMAX® technologies
theatre, now called IMAX®.
· TELUS will be the title sponsor of “Fire
on ice”, a new winter event destined for young
and old to take place in the Old Port of Montréal.
Hugues St-Pierre, president and CEO of TELUS Québec,
says this is an investment in our children’s future
and the Montréal community.
“The investment we are announcing today supports
the curiosity of the leaders of tomorrow, the youth
who will become engineers, artists or entrepreneurs”,
St-Pierre says. “The mission of the Montréal
Science Centre is to help visitors of all ages learn
about science and technology. This is a perfect example
of our commitment to make the future friendly for children
and we’re very excited that this partnership can
help us deliver on that promise. As well, TELUS is proud
to be part of some Old Port of Montréal activities
to the benefit of the community.”
Mayor of Montréal, Gérald Tremblay, attended
the event and noted the TELUS commitment to the Montréal
community and its youth: “The involvement of TELUS
within our community is well established, and includes
sponsorship of the Montréal Alouettes, the Formula
One Grand Prix, and strong support for charitable organizations.
Today TELUS is furthering its commitment to Montréal
with this investment in the Montréal Science
Centre and the Old Port of Montréal. The partnership
will benefit all Montréalers, especially our
future leaders. The Old Port and the Montréal
Science Centre are bound to the development of the downtown
core and this 10-year agreement will benefit the whole
area, be it tourism or recreational, as well as the
museum and cultural sectors.”
The Chairman of the Board of the Old Port of Montréal
Corporation, Mr. Bernard Lamarre, embraced the partnership:
“Old Port of Montréal is happy to have
TELUS join the ranks of those who believe that one of
the keys to the successful development of our youth
is exposure to science and technology. Partnerships
such as this will form the cornerstone of future developments
that we will be contemplating over the next few years
for both the Old Port and the Montréal Science
Centre, which will be revamping its schedule by 2007.
It is also very good news as we are on the cusp of the
25th anniversary of the Old Port of Montréal
and the fifth anniversary of the Montréal Science
Centre.”
May 1: Free admission day at the Science Centre
To celebrate its sponsorship and commemorate the fifth
anniversary of the Centre, TELUS is funding a free admission
day at the Montréal Science Centre on Sunday,
May 1. On this very special day, young people and families
will get to see the IMAX® film Mystery of the Nile
for free, participate in the numerous interactive activities
of the three permanent exhibitions and the brand new
X-treme Rotation exhibition.
“Bring the kids out and help us celebrate this
exciting partnership!”, St-Pierre says.
