  Claude Benoit, President and CEO of the
  Old Port of Montréal Corporation, Named
  a Member of the Order of Canada


Montréal, Friday, August 6, 2004 - Claude Benoit, President and CEO of the Old Port of Montréal Corporation, has been named a Member of the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada.

Ms. Benoit is a gifted designer and an exceptional scientific communicator and manager. She is also blessed with a remarkable talent for innovation. She has played a key role in major museology projects, in particular the Biosphère, the Montréal Biodôme and the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City. In addition, she was the driving force behind the creation of the Montréal Science Centre, which she continues to manage today. The Centre has proven to be an unprecedented success, attracting close to two million visitors since it opened in May 2000. A dynamic individual who also headed the McCord Museum and her own firm, Les Productions Métamorphoses, Ms. Benoit is now the President and CEO of the Old Port of Montréal Corporation. As such, she oversees a recreational and tourism site that attracts upwards of seven million visitors a year, and promotes Canadian heritage, culture and innovation. Ms. Benoit is a member of other organizations as well, including the Conseil de la science et de la technologie du Québec, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and ACFAS, and continues to make a name for herself by promoting smart leisure activities and encouraging scientific and technical literacy through games and innovation.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service by Canadian citizens in various fields of human endeavour. It is our country's highest honour for lifetime achievement.


Another prestigious distinction: the McNeil Medal

Claude Benoit has also been awarded the McNeil Medal for 2004. The Medal is awarded by the Royal Society of Canada to a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding ability to promote and communicate science to students and the public within Canada.
